NMFS Requires Use of Seal Sniffing Dogs
The National Marine Fisheries Service requests public comment on an application from Shell Offshore, Inc., for authorization to take marine mammals, by harassment, incidental to conducting an on-ice geophysical research and development program in the U.S. Beaufort Sea from March to May, 2007. Marine mammals that may be affected include the spotted and bearded seals.

NMFS proposes to grant the requested IHA subject to several conditions. The conditions include Shell's use of dogs trained to sniff out seal lairs.

Comments are due to NMFS by March 08, 2007.
