NMFS Publishes List of Fisheries for 2008
Section 118 of the Marine Mammal Protection Act requires that the National Marine Fisheries Service place all U.S. commercial fisheries into one of three categories based on the level of incidental serious injury and mortality of marine mammals occurring in each fishery. On November 27, 2007, NMFS announced that it has published its final List of fisheries for 2008.
The LOF determines whether the members of the listed fishery category have to comply with MMPA provisions like registration, observer coverage, and preparation of a take reduction plan.
The LOF includes a list of the marine mammal species or stocks incidentally killed or seriously injured in each commercial fishery category.
