NMFS Seeks Comment on Navy LOA that Includes Time Delayed Firing Devices
On June 7, 2012, the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service published Federal Register notice that the U.S. Navy has filed an application for a Letter of Authorization to take marine mammals, by harassment, incidental to conducting training exercises within the Navy’s Mariana Islands Range Complex in the Pacific Ocean between August 12, 2012 and August 3, 2015. The Navy filed this LOA application with NMFS pursuant to the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act. NMFS requests comments on its proposal to issue an LOA to the Navy that includes the use of time delayed firing devices, which have not been explicitly addressed previously. Comments and information must be received by NMFS no later than July 9, 2012.
