FWS Proposes Oil and Gas Take Rules for Walruses and Polar Bears
On January 9, 2013, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published Federal Register notice of proposed regulations authorizing the nonlethal, incidental, unintentional take of small numbers of Pacific walruses and polar bears during oil and gas industry exploration activities in the Chukchi Sea and adjacent western coast of Alaska. FWS is proposing these ITA regulations pursuant to the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act and its implementing regulations. If adopted as proposed, these regulations would be effective for 5 years from the date of issuance of the final rule. The FWS will consider public comments it receives on or before February 8, 2013.
