There’s a well worn stereotype of a vape bro sucking on e-cigarettes because he thinks blowing thick clouds of vapor makes him look cool. In reality, the majority of vapers (even the cloud chasers) are actually smokers looking for a way to get off the sin sticks. But with strict new regulations introduced by the Food and Drug Administration this year, many in the industry are predicting that hundreds of businesses will be forced to shut down, and some vapers may resort to going back to their original vice: cigarettes.

A White House office deleted language in a recently introduced tobacco regulation that would have removed flavored e-cigarettes from the market until they had been authorized by the Food and Drug Administration, an edited version of the document shows.

After the FDA’s regulations take effect on Aug. 8, e-cigarette companies will have two years to make the case that letting their products remain on the market is “appropriate for the protection of public health.” If they hit that deadline, they will be allowed to continue selling their products for another year while the FDA reviews their applications.

It is disheartening to see that the media’s near-exclusive focus while covering the Food and Drug Administration’s recent tobacco “deeming regs” has been on the provision that restricts e-cigarette sales to minors. The New York Times published an editorial entitled “Keeping E-Cigarettes Away From the Kids,” and the Huffington Post ran an article with the headline “Finally—Commonsense Protections for Our Kids From Tobacco.”

E-cigarettes and FDA’s New Rule

From: US GAO | WatchBlog

E-cigarettes have rapidly become more popular since they first appeared on the U.S. market about 10 years ago. Just last week, the Food and Drug Administration issued a rule to regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products.

This follows recent e-cigarette legislation requiring liquid nicotine packaging to be child-resistant and meet other poison prevention standards. As the legal landscape surrounding these relatively new products has changed, the WatchBlog has been keeping an eye on e-cigarettes.

Today’s post explores e-cigarette regulation and taxes—and why we love good data.
