Bonus update on pending state tobacco bills

MINNEAPOLIS — Mitch Zeller, the Director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, will be speaking at the 2015 NATO Show which will be held at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas on April 22nd and 23rd. The presentation by Mitch Zeller will update NATO Show attendees on the pending deeming regulations, substantially equivalent tobacco products, pre-market tobacco applications for new tobacco products, modified risk tobacco products, the continuum of risk for all kinds of tobacco products, the status of menthol in cigarettes, tobacco product standards, FDA research on possible future regulations, and the Institute of Medicine’s study on health impact of raising the legal age to purchase tobacco products.

One CDC ad relies on anecdotal evidence to make its point. It features a story from an e-cigarette user, a 35-year-old wife and mother named Kristy from Tennessee who says she started smoking e-cigarettes hoping to quit combustible cigarettes. Instead, she began to smoke both, until her lung collapsed. The American Vaping Association reportedly called the ad “patently dishonest,” saying that it implies vaping led to lung disease, when in reality Kristy had gone back to smoking cigarettes alone in the months before her lung collapsed. . . .

Ahead of finalizing FDA’s tobacco products “deeming” rule, the FTC considers taking enforcement action against e-cigarette firms for violative advertising, marketing, and sales practices.
Background
It has been nearly a year since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA or the Agency) published a proposed rule establishing, for the first time, federal regulatory authority over electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), cigars, pipe tobacco, dissolvable tobacco products, and nicotine gels (deemed tobacco products).[1]

(Reuters) – The U.S. government is preparing to roll back a widely criticized approach to public health, in which the “lost pleasure” people might suffer if they quit smoking or chose to eat healthier foods was used to reduce the projected benefits of new regulations, government officials told Reuters.
Economists at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration incorporated lost-pleasure calculations last year in analyzing proposed rules for e-cigarettes and the posting of calorie counts on restaurant menus. The agency said the analysis provided a more accurate picture of the estimated benefits of a regulation.

Minister says more evidence needed on e-cigarettes

Different perspectives on the science, use and regulation of e-cigarettes were shared at New Zealand’s first day-long symposium on the alternative device, held at the University of Auckland this week.
Participants included smoking cessation researchers, government policy makers, healthcare groups, tobacco control lobby groups, individuals and industry representatives.
The Symposium was organised by the University of Auckland’s Centre for Addiction Research and the Tobacco Control Turanga, led by Professor Chris Bullen (who is also director of the National Institute for Health Innovation).
