Should E-Cigarettes Be Treated the Same as Traditional Cigarettes for Regulation Purposes?

In a clear sign that the debate on the use of e-cigarettes continues, the Santa Monica City Council unanimously approved an ordinance recently restricting the use of “electronic smoking devices” in the same way as traditional cigarettes. Because two shops operated prior to the enactment, Santa Monica had to grant the businesses exemptions or “grandfather” status, which will allow in-store smoking or “vaping” to occur, also known as a legal non-conforming use. Santa Monica represents another California municipality that has, for now, decided to treat e-cigarettes the same as traditional tobacco cigarettes.

I admit I was a Pharmacy Show virgin. This year was the first time I attended the show at the NEC Birmingham on 5 October 2014. I had asked colleagues who have attended previously on what to expect. “Plenty of exhibitors” was the most common answer I received.

Having spoken to a few people who are veteran attendees of the Pharmacy Show, I was told that the e-cigs exhibitors have been there for a number of years, but their presence continues to grow each year.

APhA to FDA: More research needed on e-cigarettes

FDA has proposed restrictions on the sale and distribution of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and other vapor-inhalation tobacco products to patients younger than 18 years, and requiring the full disclosure of all ingredients on package labels for e-cigarettes and other vaporized nicotine products. On August 8, APhA submitted comments to the agency that reflected APhA members’ support of the proposed rule and offered specific feedback on FDA’s request for more information on how e-cigarettes are used.
