FDA asks for input on limiting cigars, chewing tobacco, and e-cigarettes, too
by Maggie Fox
Menthol and fruit flavors make cigarettes more enticing and more addictive. Now the Food and Drug Administration is taking the first step toward possibly limiting their use in tobacco products.
The FDA took its first steps last week to possibly lower the amount of nicotine in cigarettes. On Tuesday, it started asking for more input on how menthol and other flavorings make cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products more addictive and dangerous and, if so, what it should do about that.

PMI Raises Tobacco Prices in Israel
Philip Morris has raised the prices of cigarettes and loose tobacco in Israel “for commercial reasons”.
***
The state of Israel collects NIS 6 billion annually in excise tax on cigarettes. This tax accounts for over 80% of the price of cigarettes, split in 65.5% excise tax and 17% VAT. This time last year, Israel’s Health Ministry had also released a statement pertaining to the possibility of taxing PMI’s Heat not Burn device, iQOS. The Health Ministry had pointed out that iQOS would not be subject to any tax or restrictions until the US FDA decides on how to regulate the product. Therefore, once the FDA takes a decision, Israel’s Health Ministry will decide accordingly.

The famous non-combustible IQOS e-cig by Philip Morris that heats up ground tobacco instead of burning it is now available in 25 countries. Previously tested in Japan, this product has led nearly 72% of Japanese smokers to quit smoking entirely in favor of the IQOS. That’s against nearly 7% of ex-smokers turning to vaping electronic cigarettes with nicotine e-liquids.
Notably, at the recent Consumer Analyst Conference Group of New York, Andre Calantzopoulos, CEO of Philip Morris International, stated the intention of PMI to convince all adult smokers switching to reduced-risk products (RRP) ASAP. The electronic heating of tobacco conception follows the trend of anti-smoking movement that tends to reshape the whole smoky business.
