US study: Indoor vaping bans lead to more prenatal smoking

A recent study by Georgia State University economist Michael Pesko, found that laws restricting vaping at places of employment and entertainment, increase the chances of smoking in pregnant women by as much as 30%.

As the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, tobacco causes more than 480,000 deaths every year. To address this devastation, earlier this year FDA announced a new regulatory plan to lower this burden of tobacco-related disease and death. The plan takes a comprehensive approach to nicotine and tobacco, including an initiative to lower nicotine in cigarettes to minimally addictive or non-addictive levels. Aimed at shifting the trajectory of tobacco-related disease and death, the agency’s approach recognizes that nicotine is delivered through products posing a continuum of risk. This ranges from combusted cigarettes at one end, to nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products – designed to safely reduce withdrawal symptoms, including nicotine craving, associated with quitting smoking – at the other.

Philip Morris Korea: data suggests IQOS is 90% safer than regular cigs

Last Tuesday, at a news conference at Four Seasons Hotel in Gwanghwamun, central Seoul, Philip Morris Korea released their latest research results suggesting that their Heat-not-Burn device, iQOS, contains 90% fewer toxic chemicals than regular cigarettes.

The tobacco company is planning to release the full study, including all the raw data by next June. In the meantime said Mikael Franzon, senior medical adviser to Philip Morris International, Philip Morris Korea is conducting further testing on animals to get a clearer picture as to how many of the risks iQOS actually removes.

FDA PMTA delay brought optimism to US vaping industry

Altria makes a minority investment in a rapidly growing Chesterfield-based chain of e-cigarette shops

Tobacco giant Altria Group Inc., looking for growth opportunities in alternatives to conventional cigarettes, has invested in a Chesterfield County-based chain that has grown to become the largest U.S. retailer of vaping devices, commonly referred to as electronic cigarettes.

Henrico County-based Altria recently made a minority investment in Avail Vapor LLC, an executive for Altria said Thursday at a meeting of industry analysts and investors hosted by the company in Richmond.
