EPA is in the process of revising its1986 guidelines. An EPA Science Advisory Board review of proposed revisions in 1997 raised some significant issues, and those issued were re-visited by a special SAB panel on January 20-21, 1999. The issues included definitions of hazard classifications such as "known" and "likely", use of mode of action data, and methodologies for dose-response analysis.

The special SAB panel is attempting to complete a consensus report by April 19, 1999. The panel's report must then be approved by the SAB Executive Committee before being sent to the Administrator of EPA.

Another special SAB panel plans to examine issues in the guidelines that relate to children. A date for that panel's public meeting had not been set as of April 6, 1999.
