Editor’s Note: From CRE Brazil

The Coordination for the Engineering Graduate Course (COPPE) at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is searching for resources so that the project, RessurgĂȘncia (Resurgence) to carry on. The project is for the preservation of the Extra-active Marine Reserve at Arraial do Cabo, a paradise location on the coastal part of the state. Previously, Petrobras was sponsoring the initiative that included 33 graduate students in Coastal Socio-environmental Management. It offered free classes to local residents and fisherman. The objective was to curb overfishing which was putting the region’s biodiversity at risk.

Almost all the students who graduated from the course were able to work in public agencies in Arraial do Cabo and the neighboring cities. With the no sponsorship, there are no plans to start new classes.
