Contraband Tobacco Is NOT Cheap: Government Integrity is Just Part of Its Price

Editor’s Note: The State Department along with Departments of Justice, Treasury, Homeland Security and Health and Human Services warned that cigarette smuggling “Enables corruption and undermines good governance.” The news from Canada below, confirms the warnings, a Canada Border Services Agency officer has been charged with facilitating the “smuggling truckloads of contraband tobacco into Canada from the United States.” The American tobacco smuggled into Canada is turned into illicit cigarettes which are sold to children in Canada and the US and which fuel organized crime and violence throughout the Americas.

The arrest came after an investigation on a criminal organization that was allegedly smuggling contraband into Canada from the U.S.
