The illicit cigarettes went from Missouri to Chicago but WHERE DID THE MONEY GO?

ST. LOUIS  • Federal agents and local police are investigating a cross-border cigarette smuggling ring that has taken advantage of Missouri’s low tax rate to illegally smuggle tens of millions of cigarettes to Illinois, the Post-Dispatch has learned.

Undercover investigators who infiltrated the ring watched as the conspirators bought thousands of cartons of cigarettes with either fake tax stamps or out-of-state stamps, then sold them or transported them to the Chicago area, court documents show.
