The China Post news staff–The Coast Guard has arrested seven people believed to have dug a tunnel at the Keelung Harbor to smuggle cigarettes, officials said yesterday.
The Coast Guard seized 500 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, worth NT$8 million on the market, in the raid, the officials said.
The tunnel, which is 160 meters long, 70 centimeters high and 1 meter wide, is located in a less-patrolled area of the harbor near a shipyard, the officials said.
Acting on a tip-off, the Coast Gurad first detected an unidentified boat on its radar late Tuesday night, the officials said.
