MORE than 63,000 cigarettes were discovered in a Polish lorry at King George Dock just last month.
Border Force officers seized 63,680 cigarettes being smuggled on a lorry through King George Dock.
The Treasury would have missed out on more than £15,000 in unpaid duty if the cigarettes had not been discovered.
The haul was hidden inside hollow metal beams in a Polish-registered specially adapted lorry, which was carrying a load of wet wipe tissues.
It arrived on a P&O ferry from Rotterdam and was due to travel to Wales.
Sam Bullimore, of Border Force, said: “Cigarette smuggling is not a victimless crime. It defrauds the public purse out of huge sums of money at a time when the country can least afford it.”
