Charges still have not been laid in the seizure of more than $3.5 million worth of counterfeit cigarettes discovered in Vancouver last week aboard a container vessel from China.
Canadian Border Services Agency officers found 49,750 cartons of cigarettes in a container that was supposed to be full of clothing.
X-rays, however, showed something else.
The smuggled cigarettes were counterfeit Player’s, du Maurier and Marlboro brands that are still undergoing analysis.
The CBSA warned consumers in a release that cigarettes purchased from sources other than legitimate retail sources “have little or no quality control and represent a health risk above and beyond what most smokers expect.”
The investigation is ongoing.
