Judge sentences 3 more for cigarette smuggling conspiracy

A federal judge sentenced three more people Wednesday for their parts in a scheme to smuggle cigarettes from Vietnam to Lincoln.

Kim Nguyen and Hoa Van Huynh each got one day or “time served,” plus six months home confinement and 120 hours of community service for the conspiracy.

U.S. District Judge John Gerrard ordered them both to pay the government restitution of $15,267, the amount lost in taxes by the conspiracy. He fined a third person, Thuy Nguyen, $1,000.

All three pleaded guilty.

On April 24, investigators turned up more than 791 packs and seven cartons of contraband cigarettes in searches of four Lincoln residences — one of them less than a block from a police station — and an apartment in Nebraska City.

The investigation led to six indictments.

Among them, only Kim Nguyen’s sister, Tang Nguyen, has yet to be sentenced.

Earlier this month, a jury found the sixth man, Nhu Van Phan, not guilty.
