Man Pleads Guilty to Trafficking Cigarettes and Making Counterfeit Cigarettes

HARRISONBURG, Va. — A man was sentenced in federal court in for trafficking counterfeit cigarettes on Wednesday.

Hing Lai was found guilty for transporting more than 25,000 cartons of cigarettes from Virginia to New York. He was also found guilty of making $18,000 worth of counterfeit cigarettes.

Lai pleaded guilty to those charges on Wednesday and the judge sentenced Lai to the time he has already served in jail, which is just over 13 months. The judge said Lai was cooperative during that time and helped police discover other counterfeit cigarettes.

The judge said trafficking counterfeit cigarettes has become “a plague in this area.”
