OTTAWA — Police have broken up a ring that was allegedly trafficking marijuana in Canada and smuggling tobacco between Canada and the United States.
The Cornwall Regional Task Force’s Serious and Organized Crime Team announced Thursday that 37 people from Ontario and Quebec were facing charges after the RCMP-led Project O-Titan.
The project began in 2012 and targeted five separate groups operating together to smuggle contraband tobacco from the United States into the Cornwall area and distribute it around Eastern Ontario. The ring was also trafficking marijuana.
During the investigation, police seized 11,615 cartons of cigarettes, four firearms, 17 vehicles, two boats, more than 100 pounds of marijuana and more than $52,000 in Canadian currency.
Two grow ops were also dismantled, and a court order was obtained to restrain a Cornwall residence that was used to grow marijuana.
Ontario Provincial Police, Cornwall police, Akwesasne Mohawk police, the Canada Border Services Agency and the Ontario Ministry of Finance all partnered with the RCMP and the task force in the investigation.
Ottawa residents Robert Brun, 50, Lloyd Pilon, 66, Gladys Mulligan, 40, Lynn Meagher, 46, and Todd Young, 39, all face charges related to criminal organization, smuggling of contraband tobacco, drugs, guns, forgery, and the proceeds of crim.
Thirty-two people from Cornwall, Bainsville, Prescott, South Glengarry, South Stormont, Les Coteaux, Que., St-Zotique, Que., St-Hubert, Que., and the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory in both Ontario and Quebec also face charges,
