A member of the Guardia Civil frontier team has been accused of partaking in a cigarette smuggling operation.
Since November 2011 Spanish authorities have been investigating the man concerned, when suspicions were raised that there was a smuggling organisation based in La Linea which distributed smuggled items to other areas around Spain.
The smuggling was made possible due to vehicles having double bottoms, and the vehicle crossing over the frontier only at times when the Guardia Civil officer was working. This enabled them to pass through undetected.
Nine other individuals were involved in the smuggling operation. The nine took it in turns to drive the vehicle in and out of Gibraltar when the accused officer was on duty.
