The state Revenue Department reported recently that Massachusetts is losing anywhere from $62 million to $246 million a year in cigarette taxes due to “smuggling.”
Commissioner Amy Pitter noted that “smuggling is big business, much of it fueled by organized crime.”
Well, yes, organized crime syndicates have always been pretty good about seizing an opportunity — and it’s well intentioned lawmakers who have given them that opportunity.
And yes it’s time to say we told you so!
