A Virginia man stands accused of cigarette smuggling after a traffic stop near Newark.

State police pulled over Elebechir Lehreitani, 38, of Alexandria, Va., for speeding on Tuesday as he was heading north on Interstate 95 near the Route 1 interchange, according to John Yeomans, a spokesman for the state Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement.

Lehreitani consented to a search of the car, and troopers found 402 cartons of untaxed cigarettes concealed in the trunk of the 2014 Chevy Impala, Yeomans said. The cigarettes were bought in North Carolina, police said, noting they do not know where Lehreitani was headed.
