Thousands of illegal cigarettes and tobacco were sniffed out in surprise raids.
Officers from Rochdale Council and the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) visited seven shops in Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale with the detection dogs, who sniffed out 43,000 cigarettes, 15kg of tobacco and 63 bottles of illegal alcohol.
The animals – called Ozzie, Murphy and Bertie – helped the officers to find contraband stashed away in secret panels within serving counters and behind kickboards in display stands in the shops.
