BUFFALO, New York — A western New York state man has been arrested after police say they caught him trying to smuggle 200 cartons of cigarettes into the state.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office said 43-year-old Hamid Thompson of Buffalo was arrested Thursday morning after they stopped him on the New York State Thruway.
Authorities say they learned of Thompson’s plan after several weeks of investigation. A search of his vehicle turned up the cigarettes, which were contained in duffel bags in the trunk. The sheriff’s office says the cigarettes were from North Carolina.
