Fact or Fiction?
Fact.
The northern city of Mosul has been under the control of the Sunni Muslim extremist group, known as the Islamic State, since early June. As part of their imposition of strict quasi-religious rules on locals in the city, the group have confiscated or destroyed a large amount of cigarettes. But locals living in the Iraqi-Syrian border areas confirm that they’ve seen members of the Islamic State group smuggling cigarettes across the border, after confiscating them under religious pretexts.
