State Revenue Service’s Border Control officials found more than 4.5 million contraband cigarettes that were stashed in boiler units on board of a ferry that runs from Liapaja to Travemünde this month. The cigarettes, bearing Winston, Minsk and Fest brands with excise duty stamps from the Republic of Belarus, could have impacted the state budget by EUR 677,000.
During regular border control measures on board ASK Ferry at Liepaja Port, officials of SRS Border Control Office performed an in-depth inspection of a heavy cargo truck, which was driven by a Lithuanian national. According to provided documents, the truck was carrying water boiler units. They were sent from Estonia to some company in Belgium. However, SRS officials suspected something was off with the shape of those boiler units, and decided to have a closer look.
Upon inspecting the units closer, officials found a stash of contraband cigarettes hidden within boiler units. Officers found 4,516,440 cigarettes bearing excise duty stamps from the Republic of Belarus.
