Chesterfield man admits role in large cigarette-trafficking scheme

An area businessman who helped traffic 450,000 cartons of cigarettes out of Virginia for illegal sale in other states faces up to five years in prison when sentenced in federal court.

Mohamed Seid Ahmed Mohamed, 56, of North Chesterfield pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and to trafficking contraband cigarettes worth almost $20 million.

Mohamed’s sentencing has been delayed with no new date set. A hearing is set for Tuesday during which the government is expected to oppose Mohamed’s subpoena of an FBI agent to testify on his behalf. Mohamed has requested the hearing be closed to the public, but he has not made public his reasons why.
