Mayor Earlier Called Selling Untaxed Cigarettes “Minor Offense”

New York City has filed a lawsuit against a Virginia tobacco shop, alleging it sold thousands of cartons of cigarettes for illegal resale in the city, where taxes are higher.

The lawsuit, filed Dec. 9 in federal court in Brooklyn, suggests a continued commitment to cracking down on the interstate trafficking and local sale of untaxed cigarettes after the death of Eric Garner —the Staten Island man who died after police attempted to arrest him on allegations of selling loose cigarettes.
