On November 19, 2014, the Center for Regulatory Effectiveness discussed the public health dangers from illicit tobacco at a Workshop held by the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) at their Annual Conference.
CRE’s presentation included discussion of key illicit tobacco studies under way by the National Academy of Sciences and by the FDA.
CRE recommended that a Federal Task Force on the Trade of Contraband Tobacco be established to review the public threats created by the illicit tobacco trade which range from sales of cigarettes to underage smokers to the funding of terrorist groups. CRE also recommended that the Federal Task Force on Contraband Tobacco review how contemplated FDA actions on menthol cigarettes would effect the trade in illicit tobacco.
CRE’s complete presentation to the NFWL is available here.
