Contraband cigarette smugglers turn to home-grown batches to avoid customs officers

FOR every 100 cigarettes smoked in Spain, 11.2 are contraband – or approximately two-and-a-half per packet, according to the country’s customs and excise authorities.

In the southern and south-western regions of Andalucía and Extremadura, this rises to 40 per 100, or eight for every packet.

This does not, of course, mean that two to eight cigarettes in every packet you open are illegal, but this is the proportion of legal versus illegal tobacco products circulating in Spain, despite every effort from security forces.
