Steenberg police arrested several people in the last week for various crimes, including hijacking, housebreaking, theft and crimes related to drugs.

Constable Zodwa Kedama, spokesperson of Steenberg police, says a hijacking suspect was arrested at 11th Avenue in Lavender Hill on Wednesday last week at about 11:00.

“The police received information on the whereabouts of this suspect and on arrival at the address they surrounded the premises and the suspect was apprehended while trying to escape,” she says.

The police found one 9mm Parabellum pistol and 15 9mm live rounds on the suspect.

“He was arrested and detained at Steenberg. When ownership of the firearm was checked it came out positive on a Muizenberg case (reported as stolen),” she says.

The 32-year-old suspect appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Steenberg police also made 26 drug arrests and confiscated 95 tik bags, 11 mandrax pills and 51g dagga.

Three operations were held in which three arrests were made at spaza shops. “We confiscated counterfeit cigarettes at these spaza shops as well,” Kedama says.
