A KwaZulu-Natal policeman was seriously injured during a shoot-out with AK47-wielding cigarette truck hijackers during rush hour in Lenasia on Thursday morning.
Police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said police were on their way to Soweto when they saw that a cigarette truck was being hijacked about 2km from Chris Hani Baragwanath Road in Protea at around 08:00.
The truck driver was pushed out of his van, but when the four hijackers spotted the police, they opened fire.
