National Coalition Against Contraband Tobacco says ban won’t stop people smoking popular menthol cigarettes
If P.E.I. bans flavoured tobacco, it will immediately push more than four million cigarettes from the mob-controlled illegal market into PEI and the waiting hands of youth, warns a national lobby group.
“Just because a government bans menthol cigarettes doesn’t mean people are going to fold up their tent and say ‘well, I can’t smoke anymore,’ ” said Gary Grant, the coalition’s spokesman and 39-year veteran of the Toronto police force. “It will just drive people to the illegal market.
“The black market is readily (supplied) with menthol cigarettes,” he said.
