Organised crime syndicates are involved in illicit cigarette smuggling because there is a demand, the high profits and “wrap on the knuckles” imprisonment and fines.
“With links cemented in Sumatera and southern Philippines, the militant movement in the region has resorted to ill-gotten gains from smuggling illicit cigarettes,” an industry source told The Rakyat Post.
