Local author fled from Iran to live in Fairfax County [VA]

Ali Javan has to be careful when talking about himself. He declines to discuss specifics about his high school and college years. When asked where he lives, he only says Fairfax County or “near Washington, D.C.” Even his name, the one that graces the cover of Twice under the Persian Sky, a semi-autobiographical book he published in October, is a pseudonym.

He dedicated his book to Iranian-Americans currently imprisoned in Iran, including The Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, who was convicted on unspecified charges in October; former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati, the longest-held American prisoner in Iran; and Christian pastor Saeed Abedini, who was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2013 for organizing private religious gatherings. Javan also dedicated his book to Robert Levinson, a private investigator and former Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and FBI agent who went missing while researching cigarette smuggling in Iran in 2013.
