SINGAPORE — A key member of a contraband cigarette smuggling syndicate has been sentenced to a total of five years’ jail for his involvement in two contraband cigarette cases in 2013 and this year.

Ibrahim Saleh, a 45-year-old Singaporean, had absconded while he was on court bail after his initial arrest in 2013. He was arrested by the Royal Malaysia Police in Johor Baru on June 9 this year, and turned over to the Singapore Customs, which escorted him back to Singapore on the same day.
