RCMP seize 90,000 illegal cigarettes, two women charged

From: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

On March 1, 2016, police officers with the RCMP in New Brunswick’s Roving Traffic Unit stopped a vehicle travelling east on the TransCanada Highway near Havelock, N.B.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery and seizure of nine cases of contraband tobacco, containing 90,000 illegal cigarettes. The two occupants of the vehicle, a 50-year-old woman and a 53-year-old woman, were arrested and appeared in Moncton Provincial court on March 2.

Tina Marie Romain and Linda Marie Robichaud, both of Digby, N.S., have been charged with illegally transporting contraband tobacco, and of being in possession of unstamped tobacco products.

“It is illegal to transport, sell and even buy illegal tobacco,” says S/Sgt. André Potvin of the RCMP in New Brunswick’s Federal Operations in Moncton. “Anyone supporting the illegal tobacco trade can face heavy fines and jail time.”

Linda Robichaud was released and is scheduled to return to court on April 15, 2016, to enter a plea. Tina Romain was remanded into custody until a bail hearing, scheduled for March 4, 2016.

Investigators with the RCMP’s Federal Operations in Moncton are continuing the investigation.
