THE Rural City of Wangaratta has told a federal parliamentary inquiry that council has to butt out of the war on illicit tobacco trade because the current system is simply too time and cost prohibitive for it to apply the law.
In a written submission to the inquiry, council’s environmental health co-ordinator, Ross Cairns, said the “signifcant time, costs and resources” involved to pursue and prosecute those breaking the law, together with the outcome achieved, doesn’t warrant council’s pursuit.
