PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A federal judge has given some leeway to a Massachusetts man seeking part-time dentistry work while fighting accusations that he orchestrated a $5.7 million cigarette smuggling ring in Rhode Island.
A judge on Friday said Mohamad Mohamad, of Cambridge, Mass., can take temporary dental assistant jobs if he gives authorities 12 hours’ advance notice.
The 35-year-old Mohamad had asked to be taken off electronic monitoring, saying he couldn’t take temporary work as a dental assistant because the electronic monitoring ordered with his home detention requires 48 hours’ notice. He says he gets less than 24 hours’ notice for work.
The judge refused to take Mohamad off electronic monitoring.
Mohamad was arrested in November. Prosecutors allege he smuggled cigarettes from southern states with lower taxes to Rhode Island, where taxes are higher.
