A report has unveiled recently that customs officials have been seizing smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes in swoops. It has been found that a large mass of cigarettes that was being smuggled or was being brought for illegal cigarette sale in the city of Cork has been seized by custom officers.
It is being said that custom officers have found more than 125,000 cigarettes along with a large amount of illicit tobacco products in a series of raids and taken into custody. The report says that raids led the custom officers in the city of Cork to seize cigarettes meant for smuggling worth _80,000.
As per the report findings, Revenue Commissioners seized over 14,000 cigarettes at Cork Airport costing _6,130. Along with this, nearly 9,500 cigarettes were seized by the officers in Carrigaline, Co Cork as well as some 17,400 cigarettes were seized at Cork Airport on Thursday. It has been revealed that a 33 years old Romanian man who had arrived at the airport from Paris was carrying 14,340 cigarettes and was seized by officers there and then.
In addition, a large number of cigarettes and tobacco products were seized at varied other places in six different seizures, says the report. It has been found by the report that the number of cigarettes and tobacco products found in the seizures in Cork equals a sum of more than approximately _82,000.
Further, to stop such illegal acts, members of the public have been urged by the Revenue to come up with any kind of information related to the matter so that it may take a further step. The reporters have revealed that one man in the same case had to appear in court for hearing and he has been asked to pay a fine of _1,500 and has received a suspended sentence as well.
