U.S., Canadian, and Akwesasne Mohawk border agents arrested five people, and charged four of them, for human smuggling across international borders following a seven-month investigation, a multi-agency team announced Thursday.

The area, where the borders of two countries, two provinces, a state, and a native reservation meet in a maze-like cluster of islands in the St. Lawrence River, has been a notorious site for human, drug, and tobacco smuggling for decades.
