Cigarette smuggling in Mass. is up sharply, study says

In 2014 nearly one third of cigarettes in Massachusetts had been smuggled into the state, a sharp uptick over prior years, according to a recent study by the Tax Foundation.

Smuggling tobacco across state lines is a crime made lucrative by disparities in state taxes, and in 2013 the Massachusetts Legislature hiked the tax on a pack of cigarettes by $1.
