Officials: Connecticut Makes Largest Ever Seizure Of Untaxed Cigarettes

Wilberto D. “Junior” Diaz, 49, of 48 Whitmore St., Hartford, was arrested in August on charges that included sale of cigarettes without a license and possession/sale of more than 100 cartons of untaxed cigarettes. The investigation continues and more arrests are expected, Carson said.

But cigarette smugglers typically are not sentenced to much prison time, DRS Commissioner Kevin B. Sullivan said. Penalties in Connecticut, Sullivan said, are far too weak.
