A total of 16 persons are expected to appear in court in Valleyfield on Tuesday after being arrested as part of an RCMP operation aimed at breaking an alleged tobacco smuggling network.

Police allege the network operated primarily from the Akwesasne territory in New York State to the Kahnawake territory in the Montérégie, via the Saint-François Lake waterway. The RCMP say over 150 deliveries by boat were identified during their investigation, which also involved police from the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, the Sûreté du Québec and officers from Montreal, St-Eustache, Longueuil and Thérèse-De Blainville.

Tuesday’s arrests are part of an investigation dubbed Project Cendrier, which targets individuals involved in contraband tobacco, the large-scale production and trafficking of cannabis, and the trafficking of cocaine in the Valleyfield region.
