Tax probe targets local store owner

A Rocky Mount business owner who recently purchased a local chain of convenience stores has been named in a federal racketeering lawsuit for his alleged involvement in using similar stores as a front for smuggling millions of dollars worth of bootlegged cigarettes into New York City.

Shareef Hassan is partial owner of H&H Distributors in Rocky Mount and associated with Bi-Rite Market in the Battleboro community, the recent purchaser of seven L&L Food Stores spread across the Twin Counties, according to state corporate filing records. He’s also a defendant in a civil action filed earlier this year in U.S. District Court by NYC Corporation Counsel Zachary Carter.
