Still smokin’ … contraband cigarettes

Kingston has the 10th-highest rate of contraband tobacco use in Ontario, according to a study by an organization representing convenience stores.

But the local public health unit is questioning the accuracy of the study and the reason behind it.

Released Friday, the study by the Ontario Convenience Stores Association (OCSA) showed almost one-quarter of the cigarettes smoked in Kingston were illegal contraband.

The study showed 36.6% of the butts collected at Bayridge Secondary School were contraband. This year’s result showed a 2.9% increase form last year, something association chief administrative officer Dave Bryans said was particularly worrisome.

There’s no such thing as a healthy cigarette but everyone knows these are potentially worse than anything anyone could consume,” Bryans said.
