US tech firms targeted in cybersecurity talks

US Internet platforms like Google, Amazon and Facebook could face increased scrutiny under controversial cybersecurity rules being negotiated in Europe.

The debate, however, is being hijacked by countries that want to use the cybersecurity rules to boost control and surveillance over Internet companies, claiming they are critical to their economies and communications networks. Defining large Internet players as essential to the EU economy could set an important precedent for future legislation, including the digital single market, which is expected to touch on everything from e-commerce to online broadcasting.
