FERC proposes rulemaking to adopt updated cyber standards for electric grid

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking to adopt updated cybersecurity standards clarifying electronic access controls, adopting new requirements for securing “transient” electronic devices such as USB drives, laptops, and mobile devices, and requiring policies for responding to incidents against low-impact electric grid cyber systems.

FERC announced Thursday its plans to adopt as requirements the North American Reliability Corporation’s Critical Infrastructure Protection Reliability Standard CIP-003-7 on cybersecurity and security management controls….
