Julian King urges companies voluntarily to take action against spread of fake news

The European Commission’s top security official has warned that technology companies could face more regulation unless they took action to prevent the spread of fake news stories and disinformation on their platforms.

He criticised tech companies for relying on freedom of speech arguments that were “increasingly wearing thin” and said they had a “duty of care” to their consumers. “They have some responsibility in the same way that arms manufacturers have to abide by rules and terms of conduct in the case of who they can sell arms to,” he told the FT’s Cyber Security Summit in London on Wednesday.
