Government websites have reportedly been hijacked by hackers to power their cryptocurrency mining operations.

In a technique known as “cryptojacking”, up to 4,700 sites including the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and local and central government webpages in the UK, US and Australia were infected with malware called Coinhive, which forces a user’s computer to mine crypocurrencies such as Bitcoin without their consent.

Scott Helme, a security researcher, posted images to Twitter of code run on the ICO website showing it had a cryptominer installed.
